Steps restaurant owners should take after an employee injury

Employees need to be aware of their rights after they suffer an injury. To draw attention to the safety problem, they need to file a complaint with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and file a request with the employer to make the restaurant safer for all workers in the future.

Not only do employers need to make sure their workers receive the full benefits of their workers' compensation, they should also take the following steps after a workplace injury.

Care for the worker

Once it comes to the supervisor's attention that an employee has suffered an injury on the premises, he or she needs to make sure that the hurt worker receives prompt medical attention. This may include calling 911 right away so that the employee can see a doctor. After an ambulance arrives, employers should contact their workers' comp insurance carriers to begin the claims process. Most of the time, these hotlines are available 24 hours a day.

Secure the area

There are many ways for employees to sustain injuries in a restaurant. In the event the injury was a result of a slip and fall, then the employer needs to ensure someone cleans the wet area and puts up the proper signage to make sure no one else slips and falls. This is essential for investigative purposes, but it also helps with ensuring no secondary injuries occur.

Complete the necessary paperwork

The employer should begin filling out paperwork as soon as possible. The details will be fresher on the supervisor's and witnesses' minds the sooner the employer completes this. Most of the time, the employer can request this paperwork through email or by phone.

After the employer handles everything, he or she needs to once again reinforce the company's commitment to workplace safety by reviewing and updating policies and procedures, and employee safety training.
